Joel Herrig
Joel HerrigI began my radio career my junior year of high school as a statistician and color commentator at KLOH FM 103.1. KLOH later became KJOE FM 106.1. I continued my KJOE experience through high school and college moving from color to play by play during my third year at the station.

I attended Southwest State University in Marshall and graduated with a degree in Speech Communications Radio and TV. While I attended the school, I was general manager of the radio station and sports director of the TV station for a year. I was also the host of a sports program called "Sports Roundup" for two years. During my sophomore year, I met the love of my life, Paula Zilka, who I married on May 20, 2000.

After graduation, I began working full time at KJOE and began hosting the morning show in July 2000 with JoAnn Biren. With the morning show, sports season and non-work related events it has been fun and exciting. I have been at KJOE for over a decade now and many things have changed but as always we continue to improve and give our listeners and customers a quality product.

My wife and I have four children three girls and one boy. Vanessa, Hannah, Bridgette, and Simon have been a ton of fun and lots of work. They keep the house hopping with all of their activities including frosting painting in the living room, coloring walls when they see fit, and dropping things down the bathroom sink are just a few of their hobbies. We have become very aware of one thing in our home. When the kids are quite someone is going to be in trouble because one or more of the kids are up to no good.

I have been asked by some to tell a little about my hobbies and what I enjoy outside of work. I of course love sports of all kinds especially Minnesota Sports. I have been writing sports for the Murray County News and also writing for a Minnesota Timberwolves website. It seems that my age category has become the biggest video game playing category in the United States and I am one of them though I am not obsessed as others. I also like cooking and to this point all those who have tried my cooking have survived. I am currently a member of the Slayton City Council and coach Pacesetter Basketball and Junior High Baseball.

Some want to know what I like to watch on TV and for the most part its sports in the winter I am at so many games I don’t keep up with many TV series. I do enjoy CSI, Criminal Minds, anything with a paranormal background, and nothing is more entertaining than shows hunting for big foot or the most haunted house. I do enjoy going to the movies when I have the time and I can enjoy just about any subject matter if it has a good story. Nothing is more boring than movies with nothing but special effects and fighting, I need to have more to really enjoy a movie. Sadly I don’t read many books these days except those for the kids but I did read the final Harry Potter book and realized why I don’t read more. Once I start I can’t stop. I read that book in less than 24 hours and struggled to do anything until it was finished maybe in the future that will change but as of now if I start a book I need to finish is as soon as I can or it drives me crazy.

So that is a bit about my family and I if you see me out and about feel free to say hello.
