MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Charitable gambling receipts are at a 20-year low in Minnesota. Allied Charities of Minnesota says $43 million was donated to charities through pulltab and bingo games in 2009, down from $101 million in 1989.


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Twenty-six of the state's lowest-performing schools will learn today how the Minnesota Department of Education will distribute $34 million in federal grant money. The state identified the lowest-peforming schools based on test scores and graduation rates.


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A mail carrier was working in north Minneapolis yesterday afternoon when he was attacked by two pit bulls. Bryan Bloomquist suffered dozens of puncture wounds. He needed surgery and is recovering at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. A police officer fatally shot both dogs.



MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The parents of a 6-week-old baby were arrested at a Minneapolis pharmacy after they left the newborn in their car. A passer-by heard the crying baby and called police. The air inside the car had reached 110 degrees. Police say the baby was left in the car for about 20 minutes.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Republican governor candidate Dennis Daugaard (DOO'-gahrd) says it's too early to know if an Iowa casino being built a few miles from Sioux Falls will drain money from South Dakota. He says it's possible the Lyon County Resort and Casino could attract people to Sioux Falls. Democrat Scott Heidepriem (HY'-duh-prim) says he'd convene a task force to study whether to build a competing casino.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Sioux Falls woman charged in a fatal interstate crash has pleaded not guilty to seven felony charges. Authorities say Tammy Kvasnicka (kah-VAYS'-nik-uh) drove the wrong way on Interstate 229 and caused a crash that killed one man and seriously injured another on July 11.

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — A Catholic priest, a Taoist master and a Lakota holy man came together for yesterday's reburial of 130-year-old remains in Deadwood. The remains uncovered in 2006 have been identified as either an American Indian or a Chinese man. The Chinese worked in Deadwood's gold-mining industry years ago.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Sen. Tim Johnson has created an online survey for people to make comments on the how the current farm bill is working. The South Dakota Democrat will be involved in writing a new one as a member of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. The survey is on Johnson's website.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating two separate crashes involving crop dusters where the pilots suffered only minor injuries. Both crashes happened Wednesday. A crop duster plane went down in rural Jackson County while a crop duster helicopter crashed in Clayton County.


MANCHESTER, Iowa (AP) — There's a delay in the trial of a Manchester man accused of cutting his father's pacemaker from his chest with a pocketknife in 2009. Jesse Fierstine (FIRE'-stine) had been slated to go on trial on Aug. 4. It has been moved to Sept. 15. Fierstine's father died earlier this month after a lengthy illness.


DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Four inmates at the state prison in Clarinda have been charged in a fatal assault against another prisoner. Alfred Myre was found dead at a picnic table in the prison yard in June. An autopsy determined he suffered numerous internal injuries.


DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Investigators say they're confident they know who was responsible for a shooting that left one man dead and another injured near a Des Moines. Police are looking for two men who may have relevant information. Police aren't calling them suspects yet.
